Choose Your Own 3-Night Adventure on Dale Hollow Lake

Looking for a quiet weekend getaway from Nashville this spring? Just two hours east of the city, The Lake House on Dale Hollow sits directly on the shoreline of Dale Hollow Lake — not in a marina, not in a crowded rental neighborhood, but right at the water’s edge.

Dale Hollow Lake is known for its clear water, pristine shoreline, and world-class fishing. What makes this stay different is simple: this is the only privately owned home for rent on the entire 620 miles of shoreline. You step off the deck, and you’re already at the lake. No driving. No hauling gear. No competing for space.

Why Dale Hollow Lake Is the Perfect Weekend Getaway from Nashville

If you’ve spent time at lakes closer to Nashville, you know how quickly weekends can fill up with boat traffic and noise. Dale Hollow Lake feels different. The water is clearer, the shoreline is largely undeveloped, and in the spring especially, the coves are calm and uncrowded.

Because The Lake House on Dale Hollow is located directly on the water, your weekend doesn’t revolve around loading the car and heading to a marina. Morning coffee happens with the lake in front of you. Evening sunsets happen from your own shoreline. At night, the sky goes dark enough to see the Milky Way — something most Nashville neighborhoods simply don’t offer.

It’s close enough for an easy Friday drive from Nashville, yet far enough that the pace noticeably slows the moment you arrive.

Path 1: 🧭 Thrill & Explore on Dale Hollow Lake

Day 1 - Afternoon Paddle

Don’t miss a moment of your vacation! Pack some drinks and a light snack with the supplied lifejackets, and jump into the canoe right from the front yard.

You’ll have just enough time to paddle past the boat ramp and explore some of the most quiet and peaceful coves. Head back into the middle of Dale Hollow Lake right in front of the Lake House rental to pop open those drinks and watch the sun slip down right in front of you. If the clouds are right, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible sunset, all while peacefully floating on the quiet, calm lake.

(Note: grab a little flashlight from the kitchen drawer in case you decide to stay out a little longer. No reason to rush!)

Day 2: Fishing with the Pros

Book a fishing guide and receive VIP, door-to-door service right from your lake house. Fishing is huge on Dale Hollow Lake. It’s so big in fact, that Dale Hollow boasts the world record Small Mouth Bass. You can discover some lively fishing spots, but since you’re only here for a long weekend, why not cut out the trial and error, and book a fishing trip with one of the local guides?

We have several recommendations depending on what type of fishing you’re interested in, but many guests have recommended Dale Hollow Dave. His boat picks you up right at your front door. Doesn’t get much better than that!

Day 3: Morning Paddle Adventure, Small-town Charm & Distillery Tour

Morning Paddle

Last day to pack it all in! In the morning, launch the complimentary kayaks right from your front yard. Depending on the lake levels, there are a ton of unique spots to explore right around the Lake House on Dale Hollow. Pick from the Bed of Cheerios, the Underwater Cemetery (a haunting glimpse of Dale Hollow Lake’s past), or the Geological Mystery, all just a short paddle away.

Afternoon Small-town Charm

Hop in the car for the ultimate small-town charm in Byrdstown, Tennessee, just 30 minutes away. Grab lunch at the Scratch Kitchen where you’ll find the best burger around. Wander through the local shops, like Rustic Roots, and check out the old Gulf Gas Station-turned museum for a quick trip into the past.

Late Afternoon Distillery Tour

Head another 25 minutes past Byrdstown to the Southern Kentucky Distillery. Take a fascinating tour of the first legal bourbon production in Cumberland County since prohibition. The guided tour walks you through the art of distilling from selecting the grains to producing the perfect bottle of bourbon.

The large bar is a great place to sample the broad selections of moonshine, bourbon, and vodka while getting to know the families at the heart of the distillery. Tours book up, so make sure visit their website and book your tour ahead of time.

Day 1: Shoreline Exploring, Beach Bonfire, and a Blanket of Stars

Afternoon Exploration

After unpacking, why not slow down to match the pace of your surroundings? Step off the deck, walk to the water’s edge, and head left along the beach towards the boat ramp. Gaze down to find shells and the occasional crinoids. Just past the boat ramp the rocks are perfect for skipping. You might be rusty, but just a couple throws will bring you back to childhood.

If you have time, continue to the end of the cove and up the creek bed where you’ll find geodes. Crack them open. Each one is unique, but the most rewarding ones have glistening white crystals.

Evening Under a Blanket of Stars

Help yourself to the lawn chairs under the deck and set them up by the bonfire we built just for you. Enjoy the sunset from the yard and then gaze up to the sky to see what stars and planets really look like without light pollution. On a clear night you’ll see the milky way, constellations, and planets along with the occasional shooting star.

Even more enjoyable are the sounds. A crackling fire, the croaks of the tree frogs, and the hoots of the owls nearby.

Day 2: Morning Paddle, Farm Life, and Sunset Dinner

Morning Decisions

Coffee has been left for you in the cupboard. Grab a cup, turn on the gas fireplace (either inside or out depending on the temperature), and enjoy the view for a luxurious start to the day. If you’re feeling energized, take one of the complimentary kayaks out for a paddle. The best time is in the morning when Dale Hollow Lake is glassy-calm.

Afternoon on the Farm

You’ll love exploring one of the area’s best treasures: The Lavender on K&S Farm is more than just lavender (although you’ll be amazed to discover how important lavender is). It’s a full farm right out of a fairytale. Animals lazily wander right up to you, there are adorable greenhouses and a cottage gift shop to explore, loofa hangs from the trellis covering the chickens, and the rich flowers offer vibrant color everywhere. The farm is owned and run by Karl and Sue, who instantly make you feel right at home. A beautiful 40 minute drive from the Lake House on Dale Hollow, this is a one of a kind experience you won’t want to miss. Visits are by appointment only, so reach out via their Facebook page.

Sunset Dinner at Sunset Marina

On your way home, stop at the Sunset Restaurant by The Steel Coop. It’s located at Sunset Marina, and offers beautiful sunset views over the water. Enjoy modern Southern dishes such as seafood and steak, or just grab an appetizer of fried pickles and take in the view. Before you leave, pop in the Sunset Ship Store just across from the restaurant. They have the best selection of Dale Hollow Lake merch on the lake.

Day 3: Sweet treats, Call on Your Inner Artist, and a Massage

A Sweet Morning

Hop in the car and take the scenic 30 minute drive to Byrdstown. First stop: Southern Dreams Bakery where you’ll find an assortment of amazing sweet treats to kick start your morning. This is a local favorite, so the earlier you arrive, the better. The most popular cupcakes and donuts tend to go fast. If you’re celebrating something special at Dale Hollow Lake, you can also order custom cakes which are as delicious as they look.

Early Afternoon for Artists

Five minutes away from Southern Dreams, right in the heart of Byrdstown, you’ll find Artsy Fartsy: a charming art studio that offers painting, pottery wheels, and plenty of unique and fun workshops. The classes are designed with fun in mind, and no experience is necessary. The owner, April, is an expert at helping you tap into your inner creativity, and you’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face. Check out their facebook page, or call directly for classes and drop-in hours.

Relaxing Afternoon

Before heading back to the Lake House on Dale Hollow, book an appointment at Taylored Touch Spa. Their philosophy is that self-care is essential to living a happy, healthy life. Their services are designed to provide the ultimate relaxation experience that you’ll carry away with you even beyond your vacation getaway.

Gorgeous Sinking Evening Sunsets

If you want to continue that slow, relaxed vacation-vibe, pull out one of the many games or puzzles from the Lake House cabinet. Set up on the kitchen table while enjoying a snack, some wine, and the serene lake view.

Head out to the deck’s lounge chairs and turn on the gas fire pit. It provides the perfect ambiance to watch the sunset over Dale Hollow Lake one last time.

Day 1: Grab a Book and Step into History

After arriving at The Lake House on Dale Hollow, grab the provided kayaks along with the lifejackets and take a very short paddle straight out and to the right of the lake house. If you paddle to the buoy you’ve gone too far. Right below you is the largest relocated cemetery on Dale Hollow Lake. During the Fall an island emerges, and evidence of its history appears.

End your first day by grabbing “The History of Dale Hollow Lake” by Darren Shell from the book shelf at the lake house. You’ll appreciate the information as you head out tomorrow to explore.

Day 2: Rent a Boat and Explore History

Morning Underwater History

Willow Grove Marina, a scenic 30 minute drive from the Lake House on Dale Hollow, rents pontoon boats perfect for exploring Dale Hollow Lake and discovering its history.

The first history stop is Willow Grove itself. It is known as the “town that drowned”. Prior to 1943, Willow Grove was a thriving community. It was purchased by the US Government for the dam project that created Dale Hollow Lake. If you head out from the Marina, there is a buoy around the corner. When the water is clear you can look down and see what was once the old schoolhouse. The history is fascinating, and Darrin Shell’s book is the best reference for an accurate and colorful history.

Dale Hollow Dam is the Heart of the Lake

It is worth the trip to visit the Dale Hollow Dam. This is the heart of the lake’s history. The dam was authorized initially for flood control in 1943, and 5 years later power generating units started to be added. The hydropower is enough to supply power to about 45,000 people. Tie your boat to shore just left of the dam, and climb the stairs for a view of Dale Hollow Lake, the river, and the sheer enormity of the dam.

Lunch on a Boat Always Tastes Better

You have your pick of marina restaurant dining, but Dale Hollow Pizza at Cedar Hill Marina is a favorite stop for delicious pizza you can eat right on the boat!

Day 3: Cordell Hull, Caves, Moonshine Secrets, and Local Antiquing

Unlikely Birthplaces

Pickett County, where the Lake House on Dale Hollow is, also happens to be the birthplace of Cordell Hull: the longest-serving US Secretary of State, and Nobel Peace prize recipient. He was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and served for nearly 12 years. His beginnings tell an unlikely story of success. Tour the very modest one-room log cabin where he grew up, and learn how a boy from humble beginnings influenced the country.

Afternoon Caving

Right across the street from the Cordell Hull Museum is the entrance to an easy 1.4 mile loop hike. The hike passes an overlook into Bunkum Cave before descending down a steep staircase to the mouth of the impressive 100 foot-wide cave. If you were wondering how Cordell Hull’s family afforded his years of schooling, this cave holds some of the answers to those secrets: In the late 19th century, his father made moonshine right in Bunkum Cave.

Picturesque Towns

Livingston, Tennessee is a picturesque town that feels a little like stepping back in time. In the center of the the town square is the historic Overton County Courthouse. It was built about 157 years ago to replace the previous structure that had burned during the Civil War.

Surrounding the courthouse are country shops and antique stores. It is worth browsing through all of them since each one offers a unique flavor of small-town living. As you make your way through all the shops, be sure to pop in 1806 BBQ located on the south side of the courthouse square. The restaurant/antique shop offers the best of both worlds, with one-of-a-kind antiques and delicious Southern food.

Ready for a Spring Weekend Getaway from Nashville?

If you’ve been craving more time outside than inside, a long weekend on Dale Hollow Lake offers space to move again. Three nights gives you room to settle in — an evening arrival as the light fades over the water, a full day to paddle, fish, or explore quiet coves, and one last slow morning watching the lake before heading back to Nashville.

Spring is when Dale Hollow Lake feels especially open. The water is often glassy at sunrise, boat traffic is light, and the shoreline feels largely untouched. You can launch a canoe from the yard, explore hidden pockets of the lake, or simply sit still and watch it change throughout the day.

Adventure here doesn’t require a schedule — just access. And you’ll have it.

Which path would you choose?
